Register of Interests

A Register of Interests is a record kept, usually by a government body, of financial interests of its members. The register documents interests which may potentially unethically or unlawfully influence members’ official duties.

Every Councillors is required by law to complete a form regarding their disclosable pecuniary interests when elected, for themselves and, if applicable, their partners, to be sure they can act impartially for the good of the village, and to protect themselves. A local landowner who became a councillor, for instance, would have to declare this, and declare an interest if an agenda item came up where he had a personal interest. All of the councillors have to declare any interest on agenda items every meeting; for example Cllr Les Oakley being a local builder would declare an interest if he were building houses in Tongham and would not be able to vote on a Planning dispute concerning these houses.
